Catalina Ruiz

  • Age: 7
  • Diagnostic: Fanconi Anemia

Catalina is a super strong princess who, at only 7 years old, has had to face a tough opponent: Fanconi Anemia. She has been very positive and fights bravely with a very clear objective: to win the battle so that she can be the best magician in the world when she grows up.

She would like to share her story with this beautiful letter:

“Hello, my name is Catalina and I just turned 7 years old. Last year I began to feel exhausted all of the time, when I would do something I would get really tired and during recess at school I couldn’t play and would stay in the library. My parents decided to take me to the hospital for a blood test and they told us that I was sick, and that I had Fanconi Anemia, a rare illness.

My bone marrow, which is made of cells, is damaged and I need to get transfusions (“steaks and soups” in the form of little bags of blood) and I have also had to look for someone who can donate their cells to me so that my body can make new cells that function well.

I have been in hospitals since I was little, so I haven’t really been afraid because the doctors and nurses do all they can to cure me.

Although I have been hospitalized many times, I can see that my brother and family love me a lot. Additionally, I have continued learning at home with a teacher, and my friends also send me a lot of mementos and notes.

Finally, one day they told me that they had found a donor and in September they gave me a bone marrow transplant. Now, I am really happy because I have a lot of energy, I don’t need to rest, and I can dance like crazy. I am even learning how to ride a bike!

The worst to get through was mucositis in my mouth because I couldn’t speak and I love to tell stories. At the beginning I also liked shaving my head because I already knew that my hair was going to fall out, but I like to rub my head, it’s so smooth…

I have a lot of routine check ups and a lot of medicines, but I am happy and want to return to school, go on vacation, to the theme park, ah! and to register for magic school because when I grow up I am going to be a magician!”

You have so much energy, little fighter! We are so proud of you and know that you are going to be able to accomplish your dreams.
