Fundacion Aladina had the honor of participating as a speaker at the 1st International Agri-Food Summit held at La Fira de Barcelona. The foundation’s involvement in the summit showcased their commitment to cooperation and society.
The round table discussion titled “A project of cooperation and society: Fundacion Aladina” featured Ishtar Espejo, Director of Fundacion Aladina; Dr. Andrés Morales, Director of the Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Functional Unit at the Sant Joan de Déu Cancer Center; and Dr. Anna Llort, Principal Investigator of the EpicKids Study at Vall d’Hebron Hospital. Emmanuelle Perrier, a mother of a pediatric oncology patient, also participated as a special guest.
The focus of the discussion was on an extraordinary collaboration among Mediterranean countries to understand the nutritional status of cancer patients in Southern European countries. Ishtar Espejo highlighted the importance of this project and the solid group that has been formed.
Dr. Andres Morales emphasized the motivation behind the research project, explaining that in diseases like cancer, the impact of nutrition is still not fully understood. The challenges of maintaining proper nutrition during treatment create a range of difficulties that need to be addressed. Understanding the role of nutrition in cancer treatment will be immensely valuable.
Dr. Anna Llort highlighted the evolving perspective in pediatric oncology, where the focus is no longer solely on curing at any cost. The long-term effects are now better known, and this has become an additional concern for the entire pediatric oncology community. The aim of the EpicKids study is to obtain novel results that can contribute to improving the outcomes and well-being of pediatric cancer patients.
Emmanuelle Perrier shared her personal experience as a mother of a pediatric oncology patient, emphasizing the challenges families face in maintaining proper nutrition outside the hospital setting. She expressed the importance of having guidelines and recommended foods to help children navigate their nutritional needs as they grow.
The EpicKids observational study is expected to continue for approximately five years before the first results are obtained. Fundacion Aladina’s participation in the 1st International Agri-Food Summit demonstrates their dedication to advancing research and improving the lives of pediatric cancer patients and their families.
