Project Gabi: Cancer Treatment Research
Paco shared so many special moments with Gabi
Doctor Antonio Pérez leads a great team of professionals in the CRIS Unit in the Hospital de la Paz
In 2019, we made our first big investment into cancer research. We invested 200,000 euros into Proyecto Gabi (Project Gabi), which researches alternative methods for children with cancer who have relapsed or do not have other treatment options.
Gabi is a research project headed by the Fundación CRIS Contra el Cáncer (CRIS Against Cancer Foundation) which has been developed in the CRIS Unit at Hospital de la Paz (Madrid). What is most important is that the project carries the name of one of our dear ‘aladinas’, Gabi, with whom we shared so many special moments.
Who better to tell you about this new opportunity than our president, Paco, with his own words in this VIDEO.
Project Gabi uses the patient’s own immune system to fight against tumor cells. This process is known as immunotherapy, a clinical practice that continues to become more personalized and tailored to each patient.
Specifically, Project Gabi consists of editing T-lymphocytes so that they have the ability to approach cancerous cells and eliminate them, without damaging the remaining healthy cells. In Gabi’s case, her doctors were able to genetically modify these T-lymphocytes, which came from a family donor, in the hospital laboratory. After, they administered these modified cells to Gabi. With this genetic modification, the T-lymphocytes are fitted with a molecule named CAR which allows the doctors to treat the tumor. This treatment is known as CAR T-cell Therapy.
The project is headed by the renowned Doctor Antonio Pérez Martínez, director of Pediatric Hema-Ontology Services at the Hospital Universitario de La Paz.
The Fundación CRIS has estimated a total cost of 600,000 euros for this project, of which Aladina has given 200,000.

However, it’s an extremely innovative project based in CAR T-cell Therapy in which the patient’s own immune system fights against cancer. But above all, this is a project that gives us hope that we can beat childhood and adolescent cancer.”See moreLola Manterola, Vice President of CRIS Contra el Cáncer
