Aladina built this pioneering bone marrow transplant unit, equipped with cutting-edge technology and optimal isolation conditions. Named after founder Paco Arango's first film, the center was funded entirely by the movie's proceeds. With a €600,000 investment, it's now a leading center performing approximately 50 transplants annually.

What is a bone marrow transplant?

A bone marrow transplant involves the intravenous infusion of bone marrow from a donor to replace the patient's diseased cells. Bone marrow transplants are indicated for patients with congenital or acquired bone marrow diseases, such as acute or chronic leukemia, aplastic anemia, immunodeficiencies, and others.

Ideally, these patients find a compatible donor among their immediate family, but this only happens in 30% of cases; in the remaining 70%, anonymous donors play a crucial role.

Any healthy person between 18 and 40 years old can become a bone marrow donor. To join the Spanish Bone Marrow Donor Registry (REDMO), you only need to provide a small blood sample at a Transfusion Center for HLA typing (the main histocompatibility system). This test determines compatibility between two people. Additional tests are only performed if the donor is found to be compatible with a patient.
